Description
Edith Henderson Grotberg (School of Public Health and Health Services, George Washington University, 4141 N. Henderson Road Suite 1205 Arlington Va. 22203, U.S.A.) The strength of the Human Spirit can never be overestimated. It brings people through every kind of experience of adversity-illness, poverty, war, hunger, fire, loss, separation from loved ones, abuse. However, not everyone comes through these experiences unscathed or even stronger as a result. As a matter of fact the research suggests that only about one-third of the people who experience adversities are able to deal with them effectively (Grotberg, 2000). This does not mean, however, that we must accept what the research finds. Rather, it means we now have evidence of the problem; i.e., too few people are resilient, and we need to look for a solution, one of which is engaging in the promotion of resilience. Resilience is the human capacity to face, overcome, be made stronger, and even transformed by experiences of adversity (Grotberg, ibid.).
